New member, hello everybody

Post by RWAF on Tue Oct 29, 2013 1:44 am

Hello everybody, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Ros and I'm a committee member and trustee of the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund. There's a short bio on our website (rabbitwelfare . co . uk) in the section on the left called 'Committee'

I retired from teaching in 2008 after 35 years 'at the chalk face' and joined the RWAF committee in 2011 I've had a variety of pets over the years, including always having pets as a child but during my adult years there have been dogs (my two wonderful Labradors Trudy and Shadow), horses, (Spyder, Sam, Poppy and Eve), care of multiple stable cats that nobody else would do anything to help, and latterly my rabbits.

The first rabbit came to me in 1998, a lovely little grey Netherland dwarf cross, Mr H d'Bun (formerly Honey which didn't suit him at all) He was two when I adopted him. Once I'd had him neutered and all the 'danger' was out of his system - it can take up to 3 months for male rabbits to become infertile post neuter - I adopted Mrs Rosie d'Bun (formerly Snuggles) who was a terrified entire female, having been bought from a petshop by a teenager who expected her to be a dwarf which she wasn't, and so she promptly lost interest and poor Rosie spent the next year alone in a hutch. I took the hutch when I adopted her so that they wouldn't get another one but neither Rosie nor any other rabbit had to live in it again, though it was there at my house if they wanted to hop into it.

Fast forward 6 years, by which time the d'Buns were a loving couple, Rosie was brimming with confidence (though not with strangers) and unfortunately she got bladder sludge. My then vet performed a bladder flush which sadly resulted in Rosie's bladder dying and she had to be PTS.

I was still working and didn't want H to spend long hours alone, and so I adopted Cinnamon from a local rescue. H by now was over 8. Cinnamon was only 13 weeks but already bigger than he was, because she was a French Lop cross. And she had already been through multiple homes to get to me. They bonded really very easily and H was entirely rejuvenated by this lively, wonderful creature's arrival.

They lived happily together for the rest of H's life and when he passed away I adopted Nutmeg from a rescue. He was 2 and already neutered. That bonding too went very easily and the two of them (The Varmints) lived happily together for the next 4 years until Cinnamon developed cancer in her jaw and had to be PTS. That was 4 years ago. Nutmeg and I were both bereft

Betty was adopted only 3 weeks later from a local RSPCA rescue. She had a terrible history of abuse and was a very fearful and unsociable rabbit. Things went not too badly at first between her and Nutmeg but then they fell out and there was a fight. Nutmeg, was badly injured and I really feared I would lose him but a lot of love and round the clock nursing for the next few weeks brought him back to health. Once Betty was spayed bonding went more easily and they are now a very happy and inseparable couple. Nutmeg is 10 now and Betty is 6

Here's a photo of them together. Nutmeg is on the left and Betty on the right
